Just as the modern school must serve an ever-increasing and diverse array of activities and stakeholders, so must school lighting be able to meet the varying requirements of those different activities. Today’s classrooms, cafeterias and gymnasiums must be flexible, and lighting in these spaces must be able to easily adapt and change as activities change.
Lighting in schools must be able to serve these needs and more:
A: All LED lighting is not created the same. Since it’s relatively easy to build an LED lighting fixture (as compared to a fluorescent lighting fixture), a lot of new suppliers have entered the market. The first thing to consider is a supplier’s history. Have they stood the test of time? Are they lighting experts or just putting components together? This is especially important with LEDs because a poor design can actually produce lighting with more glare and poorer lighting performance than fluorescent.
Once you’ve done your homework on a supplier, look for LED lighting in the color temperature that is right for the specific space. For example, gymnasium lighting should generally be cooler for better visual acuity and alertness. Library lighting may be a warmer or neutral color temperature for quiet activities like individual reading. To facilitate the multiuse nature of most education spaces, choose tunable white lighting, which allows you to easily change the color temperature to align with each activity. The most important thing is that all elements of your solution simply work together. Look for the A+ logo for assurance that the lighting and controls are compatible and will perform together as expected, right out of the box.
