Shellworth Chevrolet, Vacaville, California understands the value of quality lighting and installed 1,000-watt metal halide shoebox-style luminaires a decade ago to attract customers to its 3 ¼-acre new and used car lot. The dealership stretches along Interstate 80—a major corridor between San Francisco and Sacramento—and operates in a high-traffic retail area where it competes for buyers’ attention with other automotive dealerships.Over the years, the light from the metal halide luminaires started to deteriorate, and they became costly to maintain. Shellworth Chevrolet strives to provide high levels of uniform illumination and was forced to hire a bucket truck and crew to replace failed lamps and/or ballasts whenever several luminaires failed. The cost of maintaining the metal halide luminaires mounted, totaling $1,200-$1,500 each year.
Energy costs were also expensive since the dealership operates the existing luminaires at full output 12 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Shellworth reported the dealership saw a 75 percent reduction in energy costs after the luminaires were installed. D-Series LED Area Size 2 Luminaires have 80 LEDs and operate at 275 watts versus 1,135 watts for the previous metal halide luminaires. They have a 5000K color temperature and color rendering index (CRI) of 70. The D-Series LED luminaires also qualify as Nighttime Friendly™, meaning the product is consistent with the LEED® and Green Globes™ criteria for eliminating wasteful uplight.D-Series LED Area Size 2 Luminaires are virtually maintenance- free and offer an expected service life of more than 100,000 hours. With the energy and maintenance savings provided by the D-Series luminaires, Shellworth Chevrolet anticipates a payback of just over two years.
