Switch to LED lighting eliminates dark areas, slashes energy usage and maintenance

Security was an issue in the parking lot of a large semiconductor manufacturer located in Oregon. Because the company operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day, employees come and go from the 4,800-space parking lot all hours of the day and night.

Previously illuminated by 310 high efficiency 400-watt high pressure sodium luminaires, the company found it was impossible to replace a burned out lamp or failed ballast every time a fixture quit working. Often, as many as 10 fixtures failed before the company hired a contractor to make necessary repairs.

“Sometimes as many as five to seven poles provided no illumination,” a company spokesperson said. “Besides the safety issues, employees began to perceive that no one was taking care of the parking lot.”

The semiconductor manufacturer tested lighting fixtures from several companies and selected LEDgend® luminaires from Holophane® based on the fixtures’ appearance, energy consumption and light levels.

LEDgend luminaires (130-watt) were mounted on existing fiberglass and spun aluminum poles at a 30-foot height and spaced at various distances ranging from 114 to 180 feet on center. Poles are installed throughout the parking lot and along access roads from a main highway and neighborhood collectors. Luminaires were installed on 130 twin poles and 50 single poles, delivering 1 footcandle average illumination level. Two photocells control the LEDgend fixtures, which are lit from dusk until dawn.

Energy consumption decreased over 70 percent, with the wattage per fixture dropping from 460 to 130. The system’s uniformity is excellent with an average to minimum ratio of 2.7:1. The fixtures, which have zero uplight, are positioned to shine the light into the center of the 80-acre campus.

“Bordered by residential areas on two sides, it was imperative to prevent light pollution,” the spokesperson said. “Light from the fixtures is very well dispersed and creates a crisp, clear environment. It also showcases the landscaping near the buildings. Employees noticed the difference in the lighting—it’s whiter and much more uniform than in the past. The security officer, in particular, remarked about how much better he can see when he makes his rounds at night.”

The spokesperson indicated the company has not developed a maintenance schedule but expects maintenance requirements to decrease significantly—from two years to 20 years. “We are very pleased with the lighting system and will likely use LEDgend luminaires as we update the lighting at other campus locations,” he said.
