The ARRA Mandate in Energy-Saving Action

In response to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the General Services Administration already has implemented a number of energy-saving measures in several properties within the Public Buildings Service, one of the largest holders of real estate in the world with nearly 354 million square feet nationwide. These include replacing standard lighting in parking lots and garages with LED (light-emitting diode) fixtures, installing lighting controls, replacing metal halide and high-pressure sodium fixtures with new induction luminaires, and replacing standard T8 lamps with the high-performing T8 units. Such measures are important in reducing the energy load carried by buildings and outdoor properties in the public sector. They serve as examples of how, by working together and focusing on relative easy areas of improvement, we can all contribute to a more sustainable future for our environment.
