Holophane Granville Earns Silver
GRANVILLE,
Ohio (Date) – Holophane proved it follows its own advice when the
company recently received LEED® silver certification from the U.S.
Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED is the USGBC’s rating system for
designing and constructing the world’s greenest, most energy efficient
and highest performing buildings.
“We
are in the energy saving business and have provided the world with
energy efficient lighting fixtures since our company was founded more
than a century ago,” said Diarmuid McSweeney, former vice president of
development for Holophane and LEED certification project manager. “It
was important that we confirm our commitment to sustainability and
demonstrate that we do, indeed, practice what we preach.”
Facility meets environmental criteria
Holophane
was awarded the LEED rating for its 30,000-square-foot Product &
Market Development Center at the company’s headquarters in Granville,
Ohio. The certification was presented in the Commercial Interiors
category, with the Holophane facility the first in the Columbus area to
receive LEED CI (version 2.0) silver certification.
To
achieve the designation, Holophane accumulated points in several
environmental categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy
& atmosphere, energy reduction, materials & resources and
indoor environmental quality. Holophane’s Product & Market
Development Center includes green features such as energy efficient
lighting; low VOC-emitting materials, low-flow plumbing fixtures and
products purchased from local and regional companies.

Holophane employs its own, parent company fixtures
Holophane
installed its own light fixtures and units from its parent company,
Acuity Brands, throughout the building. Holophane compact and large
02454 pendant mounted luminaires with 32-watt compact fluorescent lamps
were mounted in the lobby area, with compact 02454 units installed in
hallways and restrooms. The company used its Refractive Grid® fixtures
with T8 lamps for laboratories, dining areas and the fitness center.
Lithonia
RT5 recessed indirect luminaires with T5 fluorescent lamps illuminate
open office areas, with Gotham AFW downlights with compact fluorescent
lamps used to light conference room perimeters. Peerless indirect
pendant fluorescent fixtures with T5HPO lamps were installed in
executive and perimeter offices and above conference room tables.
Holophane
reduced its energy usage even further by designing a more intelligent
luminaire layout, taking advantage of daylight harvesting and employing
occupancy sensors and photocontrols.
“LEED
certification was an extensive and detailed process that required us to
properly recycle existing materials and commit to using recycled
products,” McSweeney said. “We were, for example, able to reuse 30
percent of the furniture from our previous facility. Fifty percent of
the building materials we used have recycled content.”
A team effort
Wachtel
& McAnally, Newark designed the Holophane Product & Market
Development Center and Michael Senger, LEED AP, mechanical engineer,
Heapy Engineering LLC, Dayton, served as consultant for LEED
certification. Gioffre Companies, Inc., Dublin, handled the building
remodeling.
“Holophane’s
LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,”
said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO and founding chair, U.S. Green
Building Council. “The urgency of USGBC’s mission has challenged the
industry to move faster and reach further than ever before; the
Holophane facility serves as a prime example of just how much we can
accomplish."
