Section Overview - 143c - Minimum Skylight Requirements

The following overview and the training session are interpretations of v2008 of Title 24 and are meant to provide an introductory understanding of the section.  Full understanding of this section requires looking at the full text; this includes any exceptions to these credits.

OVERVIEW

Section 143 covers prescriptive requirements for envelopes.  Subsection (c) is entitled 'Minimum Skylight Area for Large Enclosed Spaces in Buildings with Three or Fewer Stories', where enclosed spaces with the following characteristics must meet 4 requirements: (see full text for the exceptions)

  • In a building that is located in climate zones 2 thru 15,
  • Any low rise spaces greater than 8,000 sq.ft.,
  • Directly under a roof with ceiling heights > 15'

The 4 requirements (see full text for details):

  • Daylit Area: At least one half of the floor area shall be within one or more of the defined 'daylighted' area types, and such areas shall be shown on the building plans,
  • Minimum Skylight Area or Effective Aperture. this requirement sets a minimum on either the area of the skylight or of its effective aperture,
  • Skylight Characteristics.  Sets requirements for the material used in the skylight, and
  • Controls. requires that the luminaires in the area be controlled as described in section 131(c)2.
