ASHRAE 189.1-2009 Resource Center

General Description: The 189.1-2009 standard generally provides for the sustainability-related requirements for a building or major renovation in a jurisdiction that has adopted this standard. The standard in its entirety can be obtained at ASHRAE.  189.1 includes provisions for:

  • Site development,
  • Energy and Water Use,
  • Indoor environmental quality,
  • Impact from the building, and
  • Construction & operation issues

Current version: The most recent and only published version of 189.1 is 2009. 

Compliance Path: Each of the topical chapters (5 thru 10) are organized as follows:

  • x.1 - the first section details the scope of the section
  • x.2 - the next section explains the compliance path for the section; this includes, where applicable, that the project must meet the requirements of x.3 and either x.4 OR x.5
  • x.3 - here the mandatory requirements of the section are presented
  • x.4 - for chapters 5 thru 9, this section contains the prescriptive requirements of the section
  • x.5 - for those same chapters, this section contains the performance requirements which may be collectively done instead of the x.4 prescriptive requirements
